Weekend Premiership Review
Yet another weekend of Premiership football has just past, with unpredictable results and all the rest. Wigan thrashed relegation candidates Blackburn at home 3-0, resulting in Blackburn terminating Paul Ince’s contract. Tottenham’s defence grinded out a 0-0 draw against high-flying Manchester United, with notable performances from goalkeeper Gomes and Michael Dawson. Sunderland slotted four goals past West Brom, with Trinidad international Jones getting his name on the scoresheet twice before Reid and Cisse put the game to bed with no reply from the Baggies. Stoke and Fulham drew 0-0, while Middlesbrough held at 1-1 against Arsenal to the dismay of the away teams supporters. Everton’s Tim Cahill got a 90th minute winner at Manchester City to make the scoreline 1-0 to the away side, while Liverpool surprisingly drew at home to Hull 2-2. Aston Villa’s young English stars were at it again, as they beat Bolton 4-2 at Villa Park, with Agbonlahor scoring twice and Ashley Young once.
Sunday was another day of two more shocks. Newcastle picked up an excellent 3-0 win at Fratton Park against Portsmouth, with Owen picking up the first goal in the 52nd minute. And, with Liverpool drawing on the Saturday, Chelsea had yet another chance to go top of the league, only to be denied by Gianfranco Zola’s West Ham United team, as they drew with the Blues 1-1 at Stamford Bridge.
