Chelsea Draw + Premier League Weekend Review


Chelsea had the oppurtunity to go a point ahead of leaders Liverpool in the run up to a congested Christmas period but could only muster a 0-0 draw in an dull game against Everton in a match that saw John Terry sent off. The Chelsea skipper was given a straight red in the 35th minute for a reckless challenge on Leon Osman which could’ve left the Everton man a lot worse off than it did.

The London Blues had not a lot of chances to note as they couldn’t inflict damage to a solid Everton defence. Everton went the closest with Maroune Felliani flick in the 80th minute just missing the target. The Liverpool Blues though they scored when Steven Pienaar bundled the ball in but was just offside.The draw is Chelsea’s first away draw and means they are a point behind Liverpool. 

Sunday saw a crunch tie between 5th placed Arsenal and 1st placed Liverpool. The game ended 1-1 after Robin Van Persie’s crack shot was equalled by a good finish from Robbie Keane. The match also saw Emmanuel Adebayor sent off for two yellow cards, both which could be contested as for the second, it seemed as though Adebayor was merely trying to protect the ball. 

In the other two premier league matches on Sunday, West Brom beat Manchester City 2-1 to be just 4 points away from safety leaving City still in the relegation zone and Tottenham Hotspurs lost 2-1 to Newcastle, who moved upto 12th place. 

On Saturday, Aston Villa held 3rd place as their own after beating West Ham 1-0 thanks to James Milner’s deflected effort. Fulham beat Middlesbrough 3-0 and Blackburn also beat Stoke by the same scoreline to ensure smiles on ‘Big Sams’ first match in charge. In the other two games on Saturday, Bolton won 2-1 against Portsmouth thanks to two goals in the first 3 minutes and Sunderland beat Hull 4-1. All 20 teams are in action this Friday.

Manchester United were also crowned World Club Cup Champions in Japan after overcoming Liga De Quito by a goal to nil thanks to a well placed strike from Wayne Rooney.
