Gunners to shave Given from The Toon?

03-shay-givenNewcastle United keeper Shay Given will have his allegiance put to the test, if reports from the Daily Express are to be believed.

The last game that St. James’ Park would see this year was one that stopped short of a catastrophe only because of the able hands of their goalkeeper. In a game that saw The Reds tear down a shaky defence at best, it was Given who stood in the way of the men from Merseyside. Besides, it is almost unheard of for a keeper to be hailed after his team suffer a 5-1 defeat.

It comes as no surprise when reports claim that Arsene Wenger has offered £8 million to acquire the services of this keeper, especially because they have only six clean sheets from the twenty games that have been played this season.

It has been rumoured that the most capped Irish goalkeeper has also caught the eye of the Lilywhites manager Harry Redknapp, and may encounter offers that draw him towards White Hart Lane as well. But the chance to play against international clubs may be too lucrative for the man between the posts, who turns 33 next April.

While Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear will be hesitant in selling their keeper of eleven years, the need to raise funds for the transfer market window, coupled with the unrest that was shown by the keeper after their recent loss, may force his hand.

The Magpies are said to have thought of a replacement in Paddy Kenny, who is the last form of defence for The Blades. The Smoggies appear to have shown an interest too, but Kenny will certainly prefer the Toon to the Riverside Stadium.
