The Magic of the FA Cup
With most of the 3rd round FA Cup fixtures being played at the traditional time of 3 this afternoon, football supporters around the country have many games to look forward to. The FA Cup is one of the most famous domestic cup competitions around Europe, starting in the 1871-72 season with just 15 teams participating. Today, The FA Cup is far more ‘glammed’ up though, and with 700 participants this year, winning is well and truly a huge honor. Last year, Portsmouth won the famous trophy, after a win against Cardiff at Wembley. This year though, it’s all to play for, and although the best premiership teams will be written in as favorites, the FA Cup is always one for a shock, or two.
Games of notice in the third round include what should be a thrilling attacking encounter between overachieving Hull and under performing Newcastle, current holders Portsmouth against the Championship’s Bristol City, a game in which we could see a shock and Preston against Liverpool, a game which Liverpool will find extremely hard to win if they are not in first gear from the go. Already, on Friday evening we witnessed the first tie going ahead with Harry Redknapp’s revived Tottenham playing against Wigan at White Hart Lane, with the home side winning 3-1. I hope everyone enjoys their afternoon, sits back, and enjoys the magic of the FA Cup unfold.
