Chelsea beat Juventus 1 – 0 , Now in last 16 of Champions League
A tight encounter was witnessed at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea played hosts to Juventus and trumped them by 1-0 in their Champions League encounter. It was Salomon Kalou’s excellent pass that was converted in the 13th minute by Didier Drogba to get the lead that stayed through the match. The rest of the match saw some pretty anxious moments as Peter Cech saved one brilliantly off Del Piero.
This was the Blues boss Hiddink’s second successive win since he took over from the sacked Scolari. While one time Chelsea manager, Ranieri, now with Juve was accorded a warm welcome to his former home stadium but wasn’t showed any respect in terms of goals and had to go back with a defeat. The match though was tenser than the result shows and saw excellent saves from both goalies.
Liverpool also strengthened their position in the Champions League as they beat Real Madrid in an away encounter. Winning 1-0, Yossi Benayoun was the scorer for the Reds in a match that saw a very professional display by Liverpool. Real Madrid at no time looked like breaking through the defences of Liverpool and were reduced to a defeat at home.
In other encounters yesterday, Bayern Munich gave a thrashing to Sporting Liston as they won 5-0 at home. They are now all set to enter the pre-quarter finals of Champions League. Villa Real drew 1-1 with Panathinaikos.
