Boro Thwart Liverpool Title Hopes!

28-southgate-tuncayThe Riverside Stadium played witness to a historic win that will go a long way towards steadying the Smoggies ship, as three points takes them out of the dreaded drop zone leaving Stoke to churn out the right result if they are to earn a place outside the bottom three.

Benayoun and Reira were left out of the starting line-up while El Zhar earned his first start in the Premier League. The Reds began well, but soon fell behind as a ball that deflected off Alonso gave the home side an undeserved lead. But when the teams arrived after the interval, the Gods Team came out determined to hold off the visitors so much so that even El Zhar decided to contribute by failing to hit home after his captain handed him a golden opportunity.

A little after the hour mark, Aliadiere engineered a beautiful move and cut one back to Tuncay who sent the ball into the bottom corner, leaving Reina with no chance. By the end of the second half, the Reds looked roughed up, as the home side had played well enough to snatch vital points off the Merseysiders.  This loss undoubtedly ends what little hope was left for a shot at the title.

Among other results, Everton cruised to a good victory over West Brom as Cahill and Saha got onto the score sheet. This result puts them only two points behind the Gunners, who slumped to a draw against Hodgson’s horde. This is their fourth draw in as many games and even a fifth place finish is beginning to looks shaky for Wenger’s wards.

Stamford Bridge will revel in delight as they witnessed yet another late winner. Lampard headed one home during extra time to give the Blues an important victory, which sends them over Liverpool and into second place.

Here are the results of Saturday’s games:

Middlesbrough (2-0) Liverpool
Everton (2-0) West Brom
Arsenal (0-0) Fulham
Chelsea (2-1) Wigan Athletic
