United Outclassed at Old Trafford! Liverpool Still In With A Title Shout!

It would have been a brave man who would have predicted the outcome of this game, and an even braver one who would have got it correct. The Mersersiders came from behind to win a game that will be talked about for years to come.

The home side struck first through a penalty, after Pepe Reina came off his line and took down Park Ji-Sung in the 23rd minute. The referee pointed to the spot, and Ronaldo made no mistake. However, Sir Alex would not be allowed to chew his gum in peace.

Within minutes of grabbing the lead, the home side made the cardinal error of slacking in the defensive area, and Vidic was the guilty party when Torres went one on one with Van der Sar and coolly put the ball past him. Suddenly the away fans were on song, and a come back was on the cards. The men from Anfield were piling on the pressure, and on one such occasion, Gerrard was too quick for Evra, who took him down in the area. The referee had no choice but to point to the spot, and the talismanic captain struck home to give his side the lead.

After the break, the Red Devils tried hard to push for an equaliser, while the visitors worked to put the game beyond all doubt. Vidic got sent off again against Rafa Benitez’s men due to a foul on Gerrard, and with lesser men the result could go only one way. Aurelio hit home with a good free kick, and as if to emphasise the magnitude of the victory, Dossena, who had come on as a substitute lobbed one over the keeper and scored a sublime goal in the last minute to record a very famous victory.

This cuts the lead down to only four points, although United still have a game in hand. But it has proved that the red half of Manchester is not indestructible. On a historical note, this is the biggest win for Liverpool at Old Trafford since 1936. It also marks a hundred victories in the league for Rafa The Red, while the Manchester based club has lost its fourteenth home game again.
