United lose at Fulham, Chelsea go down to Spurs

The Premier League title opened up for Liverpool when leaders Manchester United lost to Fulham 2-0 and join second placed Chelsea went down to Tottenham Hotspur 1-0. Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney were sent off in the 18th and 89th minute respectively as the nine-man Man U side tried in despair to pull out a draw. But Fulham was in no mood for compromises today as Murphy and Gera scored in the 18th and 87th minute respectively. Fulham who hadn’t been the Manchester club in 45 years, now earn 3 proud points while the latter’s lead has been cut by one point.

Meanwhile at White Hart Lane, the Spurs pulled off a brilliant 1-0 win over the Blues who failed to impress. The Spurs goalie had a major part to play and Luka Modric earned the man of the match for his brilliant goal and over all display. The score line didn’t do justice to the excellent play by the hosts with Robbie Keane missing three close chances. Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink later commented that their chances to the title were almost nil after losing this match.

In a relegation battle at the bottom of the table, Stoke defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 and kept themselves afloat. Blackburn drew with West Ham Newcastle lost to Arsenal 1-3 at home. Portsmouth won 2-1 at home and another draw was witnessed at West Bromwich as they drew with Bolton wanderers.

Sunday will see Liverpool looking to consolidate as they have a face off with Aston Villa and a good win will see them toppling Chelsea for the second spot. Man city will play Sunderland and Wigan come up against Hull.
