Rio Ferdinand has come out singing in praise of Manchester United and England teammate Wayne Rooney for his performance in the World Cup qualifying games.

The defender, who has just got back onto his feet after nursing an injured back, has been quoted by the Manchester Evening News as saying that the forward is an essential part of the team, and his consistency has been fantastic recently.

Speaking on the weekend game against Slovakia, the former Hammers player said that he was able to get a better look at the individual performances since he was not on the pitch, and believed that the young forward was the best player on the given day.

Rooney will earn his 50th cap when England face Ukraine in a World Cup qualifying game at Wembley, on the 1st of April.

Getting back to the stunning display of football put out by his 23-year-old teammate, he also paid a backhanded compliment to the way Fabio Capello has been managing the squad, when he said that the striker has been implementing what the coach has been trying to get out of his wards. He also urged the rest of the team to hit a patch of good form when he mentioned that the more the number of players doing precisely what the former Real Madrid manager demands, the better for the team.
