Steve Gerrard Doubtful For Chelsea Game

46-steven-gerrardGuus Hiddink masterminded his side to a famous victory at Anfield at the end of which the visitors deservedly won 3-1 and have one foot in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Following this upset at Merseyside, many fans had hoped that the Reds would summon the grit and determination that saw them lift the trophy in 2005 after being three goals down at halftime. However, this optimism has been given a shot in the arm, as it has been reported that their talismanic captain Steven Gerrard may not be fit in time to face the Blues.

Gerrard is believed to have aggravated a hamstring injury that he was carrying during the high profile clash against the Pensioners, and is said to be doubtful to feature in the weekend game against Blackburn, and may even miss the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

During the post match interview, the Reds’ boss also mentioned that Torres was not fully fit, but started the game because the team needed his presence on the pitch. Should the two pivotal players miss the game against the Riversiders, their title hopes may come to an end if the team fails to perform. Looking beyond the weekend, an absence of two main players will almost certainly turn into a gift for Chelsea that will undoubtedly be capitalised upon.

It will be interesting to see if Benitez takes the risk and plays both his wards and risks losing the title to United, or if he waits it out hoping for a strong finish in the league while abandoning any hope of European glory this season.
