Ten Goals, Two Draws, Two Teams Advance!

Chelsea FC v Liverpool FCIt was time for the European games, and Liverpool had a mountain to climb as they took to the pitch at Stamford Bridge, without the presence of their inspirational captain Steven Gerrard, who was out through injury. To even the playing field, the Blues were missing John Terry due to suspension.

After a slightly slow start, the Reds got their act together and hammered in two before halftime, due to an intelligent free kick by Aurelio and a penalty by Xabi Alonso. The Merseysiders only needed another goal to book a place in the semi-finals, but Chelsea had other plans.

A goal came after the interval, as Hiddink had shifted to a more offensive tactic. Anelka sent in a half hearted cross that Drogba jabbed at, and the reaction from Reina was a split second later than it should have been, and the Bridge was set alight. Alex then unleashed a thunderbolt to level the score, while a Lampard goal led everyone to assume that the tie was killed. But the Benitez boys came back with a lucky goal through a speculative shot by Lucas that took a deflection off Essien to find its way into the back of the net. A late header by Kuyt made sure that his side needed only one more goal to seal the deal, but local hero Lampard bagged a brace by levelling to score at 4-4. As the referee brought things to a halt, the men from Anfield left with honour, as they had battled hard to go through to the next round, but the defeat in the first leg had proven too difficult to surmount.

The story was very different in Germany, as Bayern Munich hosted Barcelona in order to regain lost pride at the home of the Catalan giants. Ribery opened the scoring after skipping past Valdes, but Barca came back in style as their superb passing game shone when Keita scored to put them on par. The teams played out a draw, thereby giving the home side some consolation for the thrashing they received at the Nou Camp.

Chelsea and Barcelona will face each other in the next battle for European glory.
