The rise of the Wolves – Wolfsburg in Bundesliga
Mention the word Wolves to most English football fans and we get an image of Gold and Black of Wolverhampton Wanderers! But this story is not of the boys from the Black Country, it’s about a previously unheralded team from a city that Volkswagen built. That team is Wolfsburg, who are currently heading the Bundesliga table above Bavarian giants Bayern Munich, Hertha Berlin and Stuttgart, with just three games remaining.
They have been inspired by a deadly duo up front in the shape of Bosnian international Edin Dzeko and Brazilian Grafite. The pair have scored 43 goals between them in all competitions. Grafite has been some what of a journeyman, having spells in his native country, France and South Korea before setting up home in German in 2007. Since his arrival at the Wolves the Brazilian has became a prolific goal scorer, which he was never seen as before, scoring 27 goals so far in all competitions.
His strike partner from Bosnia also joined in 2007 and since then the 23 year old has been a prolific scorer, scoring 26 goals in all competitions this season. The former FK Teplice star is touted as a future star and its believed he could move to a bigger club in the summer, with rival Bayern rumoured to have registered an interest.
The amazing thing about the Wolves rise is that before last season they had struggled against relegation and were happy to finish mid-table. So to be challenging for the Bundesliga title is incredible. Even if they fail to clinch the title, they will see this season as a spectacular success, with Champions League football heading their way next season. I for one would love to see Wolfsburg claim their first ever title, as I have really enjoyed watching their football this season and they have been a breath of fresh to the Bundesliga.
