Michael Owen – A good signing for Everton?

It now looks inevitable that former Newcastle striker Michael Owen will be joining Everton. He is now a free agent after his lucrative contract on Tyneside expired. The likes of Hull City and Stoke City have been linked with the striker along with Aston Villa, but the best bet is Everton. The Toffee’s are on the lookout for bargain buys and Owen on a free transfer could be a good purchase.

Unfortunately though, Michael Owen brings the schizophrenic out in me. On one hand the former England star has a scoring record that includes over 200 goals at club level and 40 on the international stage. Yet in the last four years his injury record is atrocious and he was deemed a flop at Newcastle because of his failure to keep clear of those injuries.

If he signs on a pay as you play basis then it could be a shrewd move by David Moyes. It’s also believed that the next club he joins will only offer him a one year contract, which means that if it doesn’t work out then Everton can let Michael move on next summer without losing much, other than his wages. I would like to see Everton sign Michael Owen and I think David Moyes can get the best out of him.
