Heres to you Mr Robson – Bobby dies aged 76

bobbySo poor old Bobby Robson has gone to manage those gone before him in football heaven…I just heard the news that he passed away after his long battle with cancer. A true gent in the game, not a bad word could be spoken about him. According to those who knew him, he was a genuine football man who lived for and loved the game beyond anything else.

Sir Bobby’s play career spanned nearly 20 years, in which time he played for only 3 clubs – Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and for the now defunct Vancouver Royals. He also garnered 20 caps for his country and scored 4 goals. He is perhaps better known for his managerial success at both club and international level. He proved himself to be one of England’s greatest every manager’s when he guided the team to the semi final of the 1990 World Cup. His success was second only to Sir Alf Ramsey. Most recently Sir Bobby mentored Steve ‘Stan the Man’ Staunton during his spell as Ireland manager. He was knighted for his services to the game in 2002.

Always a fighter, Sir Bobby had overcome several different forms of cancer and when he was diagnosed with cancer for the fifth time, he selflessly decided to devote the remaining years of his life to helping fight the disease. The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation was launched in March 2008 and raises money for the early detection and treatment of cancer. Within 9 months of its launch the foundation had raised over £1million.

Of his disease, Sir Bobby had said “I am going to die sooner rather than later. But then everyone has to go sometime and I have enjoyed every minute

Rest in Peace Sir Bobby, you were a legend on and off the field.
