Kolo Toure puts the final nail in Arsenals invincible coffin

The transfer of Kolo Toure to Manchester City for £14m is of more significance than some might think. While to many it is another endorsement of money running football as City take their summer spending to astronomical levels, it is also more of a symbolic significance, especially if you are an Arsenal Fan. For Kolo Toure is the last of ‘The Invincibles’; the Arsenal team that went unbeaten in the league for 49 games before that ill fated and ill played game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The 2003-04 season that seen them win the Premiership was as follows: 26 wins, 12 draws and 0 losses. Remarkable.

This was no ordinary team, obviously. The fiery spirit of Jens Lehmann ensured a solid presence in goal which was further reinforced by the steely defense of Cole, Campbell, Toure and Lauren. Vieira and Gilberto Silva provided further cover defensively which allowed the flamboyance of Pires, Ljungberg, Henry and Bergkamp to chop and change positions and provide a fluidly to the Arsenal team that’s has not been seen since. In retrospect this was one of the most balanced teams ever; a concrete backline complimented by a aesthetically pleasing and brutally efficient attack force that scored an impressive 73 goals while only conceding 26.

Much has been said about how the current Arsenal team compares to ‘The Invincibles’. Put simple, it doesn’t. However there may be an upside to all of this. The symbolic departure of Toure and the ‘end of an era’ emblematical representation that this brings could benefit the team. This is their chance to move on from ‘The Invincible’ period, to truly start anew. Van Persie, Arshavin, Walcott, Clichy et all have the chance to, not emulate ‘The Invincibles’ for I don’t believe we will see another team like them anytime soon, but to forge their own legacy instead of living in shadow of the members of that legendary squad.

Now that ‘The Invincible’ era is well and truly over, Arsenal have the chance to move on, the question is: What direction of the table will they be headed?
