pool This is one of the tastier clashes on offer in the first round of the Premier League, and it promises to be one that is filled with all the excitement that usually goes a crunch league fixture.

Liverpool faltered in their title ambitions last season due to their inability to win games against teams that were not as strong in comparison. But they have since owned up to their faults and have vowed to improve on their second place finish.

On the other hand, Spurs have spent a fair amount of money in recent years hoping to see some success by breaking into the top four. But for one reason or another, this has not materialised. Manager Harry Redknapp has not been reserved in highlighting his ambitions, as he has indicated that the Lilywhites would like to finish in a Champions League spot at the end of the season. This can be achieved only by beating the bigger clubs in the league, and no one will know that better than the gaffer himself.

As for the Reds, Xabi Alonso left for Real Madrid and has since been replaced by the arrival of Alberto Aquilani from Roma. However, the latter is still injured and will remain on the sidelines for a minimum of four weeks. While Lucas Leiva appears to have put his dismal showings behind by being the Merseyside club’s best player in the pre-season, it remains to be seen if he can continue that form into the league.

All in all, this appears to be one cracking encounter, as both clubs’ ambitions will be on full display right from the word go.
