United defeat Birmingham in opening game
Manchester United have started their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Birmingham at Old Trafford. United put early pressure on Birmingham and it was no surprised when United took the lead in the 34th minute through Wayne Rooney. The England striker’s first headed effort struck the post before he tapped the rebound home.
Birmingham defender Franck Queudrue was unlucky not to equalise, as his header was cleared off the United line by Patrice Evra. Darren Fletcher then shot wide when through on goal, even though it looked easier to score than miss.
Wayne Rooney then came close to doubling United’s lead. The England striker picking the ball up 30 yards out and letting fly, only to see it brilliantly saved by on-loan goalkeeper Joe Hart. Birmingham came close to equalising in the 75th minute, substitute Christian Benitez opening up his body and unleashing a good shot, the Ecuadorean being superbly denied by United keeper Ben Foster.
Michael Owen thought he had scored on his home debut, but unfortunately for the former England star the assistant referee ruled him offside. Owen missed a glorious opportunity in injury-time; the striker ran through on goal and was denied by Joe Hart. It was a solid if unspectacular start for the champions and Birmingham can take lots of positives from their performance.
