Barclay’s Premier League sits atop the football world
England’s Barclay’s Premier League is unquestionably the world’s most prestigious football organization in existence today. The Premier League is the top tier of English football. The league consists of 20 member teams and operates as a corporation, with each team considered a shareholder and holding one vote. The league operates on a promotion and relegation system with the bottom three teams each season being relegated down to the Football Leagues first tier, and the top three finishers from that tier being promoted to the Premier League.
Currently the Premier League is dominated by the “Big Four” clubs, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal. In the last 10 seasons, no team outside the “Big Four” has won the league title, with Manchester United winning six titles, and Chelsea and Arsenal capturing two titles each. In this decade, the “Big Four” have all finished in the top six every season, and in the last four seasons no team outside the “Big Four” has been able to finish above fifth. Only one team outside the “Big Four” has ever won the Premier League title as Blackburn Rovers finished atop the table in 1994-95.

The Premier League was formed on May 27, 1992 when the top flight clubs resigned from the Football League to form the Premier League. Money was the driving factor behind the decision as England’s big clubs believed that separating themselves from the Football Association and Football League would allow them to negotiate their own commercial contracts and bring more money into English football in general. The top clubs believed this added money would allow English teams to compete again against the rest of Europe.
