Hull City 1 – 0 Bolton – 22nd August – New boy Jozy comes good
Phil Brown’s Hull City put the disastrous defeat in midweek to Spurs firmly behind them with a win over Bolton at the KC Stadium. It was not, however, a resounding roar for the The Tigers but rather a timid meow as the solitary goal in their 1-0 victory came completely against the run of play and still leaves Phil Brown with much to think about.
Jermain Defoe et al had decimated Hull’s defense on Wednesday night and their was the feeling that Bolton were posed to do the same; it wasn’t to be, however. Although Gary Megson may very well be wondering how his side left without any points or
anything to show for their efforts. Kevin Davies, Johan Elemander, Matt Taylor and Sam Ricketts all came close with Bolton holding the Hull goal under siege much akin to the Alamo.
It seemed as though a Bolton breakthrough was going to come eventually however it was Hull, much to the surprise of their own supporters and probably most of the team, that scored the decisive goal. Debutant Jozy Altidore repaid Brown’s faith in him as he set up Kamel Ghilas with his first touch of the game; the Algerian forward made no mistake and volleyed past a helpless Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Even though Hull got the points, Megson can perhaps come away from this slightly more pleased than Phil Brown on his teams performance. One can’t help but think that Hull will struggle immensely this term (this was their first win in 12 games) while Bolton, if they can find that killer instinct and predatory nature, can go on to better things than a scrappy defeat in East Yorkshire.
