Man United, Chelsea win opening Champions League matches

Leading English Clubs Manchester United and Chelsea won their opening Champions League encounters against Besiktas and FC Porto respectively. The reigning Premier League Champions had to fight their way around Besiktas as they won 1-0. Paul Scholes was the saviour for the day as he scored the lone goal in the 77th minute.

The match saw very few chances and both sides matched the other in game play and wits. After a fighting first half where both teams persisted with their playing styles, Scholes got the clincher when he headed one from Nani past the keeper into the goal. After that again, no chances were seen and both teams carried on defensively. In the second half, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick were replaced by Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen.

The other match featuring an English club also saw a 1-0 win. The Blues scored through Nicolas Anelka in the second half as they trounced FC Porto. Playing at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea did manage to wade off some scares from the Porto strikers as they got a little too close for comfort in the fag end of the match. Didier Drogba, a Chelsea mainstay was not visible in the field as he was suspended last season in the semi finals. It seems the Blues are on track to claim the trophy that has been eluding them for years now.
