Liverpool 1-0 Debreceni: Kuyt Ignites The Kop

Dirk Kuyt - Fernando Torres

The goal scored by Dirk Kuyt during first half stoppage time was enough to give Liverpool a victory on Matchday 1 of the Champions League against Debreceni.

The visitors could be let off the hook for the edgy display in the early stages, as they are the first Hungarian side to grace the competition in 14 years. But their overall play would have given them enough confidence to walk out with their heads held high.

There was a flurry of opportunities in the first period, when the Reds reigned supreme in the attacking third of the pitch. But for all the attacking prowess of the Merseyside club, the all-important breakthrough did not come until added time. A shot by Fernando Torres was parried by the goalkeeper, but the loose ball fell to Kuyt, who quickly dispatched it into the bottom corner.

Rafael Benitez’s men continued to harass the visitors’ defensive line with some superb attacking play, particularly owing to some fleet footed play by Yossi Benayoun, who made some sparkling runs. An extension of the lead did not arrive, but in the end, a lone goal was enough to keep the Kopites happy.
