Grants Debut with the Pompey’s got wasted
Avram Grant could do little to help out Portsmouth on the first day of his charge as United reigned on top of the Pompey’s side. At Fratton Park, it was a record of 100 goals on one side and a hat trick after almost 3 years. The first half was quite entertaining as both sides looked to score but United were the first to open the scoring. Wayne Rooney scored a Premier League hat trick starting the opening goal by playing a one-two with Valencia and then driving home.
United was awarded a penalty and moments later the Pompey’s had their own share of fate when they were awarded the same. Wayne Rooney and Kevin-Prince Boateng scored for each of the teams and the teams were leveled at that stage but soon enough United started the rout and took the game away and before the closing stages the old war horse Ryan Giggs scored his 100th Premier League goal through a 20 yard free kick.
Meanwhile Manchester City had their seventh successive draw against Hull where City was guilty of conceding a penalty in the closing stages of the game. Robinho took the field for the first time since the end of August for City but it was Wright Philips who scored through a deflected shot on goal. On the other hand, Bullard converted the spot kick which went in even after Shay Given’s desperate attempt and the match was drawn.
