It was a wet cold night at the Old Trafford and Manchester United had their task cut out against a near full strength Tottenham side in the Carling Cup quarter finals. Manchester United had the same side that lost to Besiktas last week but the Carling Cup holders managed to secure victory with some scintillating display from the emerging stars.
22 year old Darron Gibson proved his manager correct with 2 goals in this knock out match. Gibson had to take the bench on most occasions as his senior pros had so far done the job in the Barclays Premier League. He scored the first goal in the 16th minute. This Manchester United side went into the match with the youngsters such as Danny Welbeck, Overtan, Anderson and Richie De Laet. De Laet was impressive at the left back position and the match started with United showing intent and purpose to win which was otherwise lacking amongst the Hotspur players.
Anderson was close to scoring in only the 48th second mark. Vidic was impressive and managed to protect his own goal by preventing Keane, Bentley and Hutton. The first goal came when Ji-Sung Park got Anderson down the left and the Brazilian invaded inside getting past Dawson and then finding Gibson who finished the final move. The second goal was a brilliant piece of display from the same man when Park made it through to Berbatov who found Gibson and the 22 year old after a one-two pass with Welbeck shot from 25 yards into the right top corner of the Tottenham goal.
Welbeck was impressive with his speedy runs through the left flank while Tottenham had their best chance in the 21st minute when Defoe’s shot from 8 yards out was blocked by Richie de Laet.
