Arshavin strike gives Arsenal a win over Liverpool
Andrey Arshavin struck the winner at Anfield last night as Liverpool lost to Arsenal 1-2 in a Premier League encounter. This win was a big step forward for the Gunners as they managed to have a grip over the third spot in the league table and also close the gap with leaders, Chelsea.
It was Dirk Kuyt’s 41st minute goal that gave Liverpool the opening in a match that saw them perform fairly well. But a methodical error by Glen Johnson when he kicked Nasri’s pass behind for an own goal opened the match for Arsenal. off pace till the first half, Arsenal seemed to crawl their way back in this match and gained momentum after this goal.
Arshavin scored a fabulous goal past Reina in the 58th minute to take an unprecedented lead in the match. The Russian has last season tormented Liverpool at Anfield with a 4-4 draw and seemed to be their bone of contention again this time.
Big boys Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres seemed little off key and had to settle for applauding their victors at the end. This was the first time since October that the two were starting together but the magic couldn’t be created. Torres had started coming in as a substitute for a few months.
While the match saw 50% ball possession from both sides, this loss saw Liverpool slump further down in the table to seventh spot. They will have to pull off something huge to regain their winning touch.
