Hart breaks Chelsea’s heart, Gomes denies Fulham a win
Birmingham gave a show of both aggression and defense at home as they held Premier League table Leaders Chelsea to a goal less draw. The match saw a superb display by Birmingham keep Joe Hart who stood like a wall and denied Chelsea of any chances they had. Not even a boot hit on the head could stop the inspired goalie from leading his team to a safe spot.
A controversial Chucho Benitez was ruled offside in the first half though it looked clear. Minutes before half time, Daniel Sturridge missed a goal chance created by Didier Drogba. Alex’s 35 yard free kick could only manage to hit the bar in a frustrating match for the Blues. Frank Lampard’s low drive was stopped by Hart as was a Sturridge low shot.
Sebastian Larsson took the free kick for Birmingham but Petr Cech made a good save of that. While both teams shared ball possession, Chelsea seemed off color and the home side seemed to come out on top. Florent Malouda got a red card for fouling Steven Carr and left the field in the last minutes of the match.
This was the first time in 34 games that Chelsea have failed to score and they won’t be proud of it. This draw won’t do any good to their standing in the Premier League table especially if Manchester United win tomorrow.
Boxing day fixtures were kicked off with a string of draws as another keeper was responsible was saving the match for his side. Tottenham Hotspurs pulled off a goalless draw with the assistance of Heurelho Gomes against an aggressive Fulham. The hosts were coming up on a high after their victory over United but seemed to look small under some impressive keeping by Gomes. Remarkable amongst his saves was Bobby Zamora’s header. On the other hand, the Fulham keeper was a free man as the Spurs rarely troubled him. Gomes would’ve been happy with his performance and shrugged off nightmares of last season’s own goal against the Spurs.
West Ham ended a happy 2-0 match against Portsmouth with 18 points. They now sit one win away from snapping out of relegation blues. Allessandro Diamanti scored through a penalty in the 23rd minute and Kovac consolidated in the dying minutes of the match. In the battle of the relegation, whoever won would’ve saved their position from the danger zone.
