Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers end in a tie
Both Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers put themselves into trouble by ending their match with a 1-1 tie at the DW stadium on Saturday.
Benni McCarthy’s 30minute goal put the visitors into a commanding position. But his first of the season was equaled by Hugo Rodalegga’s powerful header in the 53rd minute of the match. Both Wigan Athletics and Blackburn Rovers are in trouble as they managed to win only one of their previous eight and seven outings during the season.
There was very little to choose among both the teams during the first session of play. Rovers came tantalizingly close to take a lead, which resulted in a miss from McCarthy, who failed to put his foot on Junior Hoilett’s diagonal pass. Rover’s poor luck continued into the next five minutes where English goalkeeper managed to keep out a dangerous header from teammate defender Chris Samba.
The first half was marked by Rover’s dominance as they were clearly trying to get physical on the pitch. Three players from the Rovers were booked even before stoppage time. But the most significant foul came from Wigan’s Rodallega who imposed a body check on Michael Salgado on the thirtieth minute of play. Minutes later McCarthy converted a Keith Andrews free kick into a fabulous goal. Two minutes later Paul Scharner failed to equalize with a misdirected shot although right wing Charles Nzogbia managed to provide an excellent ball in the middle.
Both Rodallega and Nzogbia continued the pressure on their rivals and were rewarded with an equalizer in the 53rd minute as the former headed on into the net. However credit goes once again to Nzogbia who managed to provide a descent cross after cutting through the defense from left wing. The remaining of the match was closely contested but ended in a draw as both teams missed too many chances.
