Man U close the gap at top, defeat Wigan 5-0

Manchester United closed the gap at the top of the Premier League to 2 points again as they defeated Wigan Atheltic 5-0. The emphatic performance saw Wayne Rooney topping the Wigan defenders at Old Trafford. He scored to get the proceedings going for his team in the 32nd minute. Michael Carrick swept in a low shot from close range to double up and youngster Rafael DeSilva made it three before half time.

Dimitar Berbatov shrugged injury woes to score in the second half and Antonio Valencia got the fifth cap in the 75th minute. This marked Manchester United’s 10th straight victory over Wigan and this showed in the visitors attitude. With shoulders slumped and a low morale, they seemed to have lost the match before they started. Add to that a classy display by Man U and the match belonged to the hosts.

Further pressure was created for Chelsea, the league leaders as Arsenal visited Portsmouth and defeated them 1-4. They now sit within 4 points of the Blues and 2 points of second placed, United. Captain Cesc Fabregas was not playing due to injury but the display was anything but slow. Eduardo got into the act in the 28th minute and Nasri followed it up to take the Gunners 0-2 in the first half.

Teenager Ramsey hammered one in from 20 yards, making it first solo goal. Alex Song headed in a Nasri pass to make it 4 for the visitors. A consolation goal by Belhadj in the 74th minute saw them trouble the scorers too. With this, Pompey also hit rock bottom of the table.

Premier League now takes a break as the New Year dawns. The matches now start on 5th January.
