Liverpool split points with Stoke, Chelsea, Man U win
Many hearts were broken at Liverpool as Stoke’s Robert Huth scored a last minute goal and denied the Kops a victory. The match ended 1-1 even after Sotirios Kyrgiakos drove home a goal from close range early on to put the visitors in the lead.
This result will do little to get under-fire Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez out of his woes. His team’s poor showing and injury problems have already bugged Rafa and the draw against Stoke doesn’t help his morale a wee bit.
Chelsea had a goal feast at Stamford Bridge despite playing without Didier Drogba. They defeated Sunderland 7-2 in a match that saw the Blues go up 4-0 up in the first half. All the players seemed to get into the act with Nicolas Anelka starting the proceedings in the 8th minute itself. Malouda came up with a superb header in the 17th minute only to be followed up Ashley Cole’s goal 5 minutes later. Frank Lampard also scored twice, first volleying in the 34th and then in the 90th minute. Michael Ballack headed one in from close in the 52nd minute. The second half saw some defensive lapses from Chelsea with Sunderland scoring in the 56th minute through Zendon. Anelka scored his second fantastic goal in the 65th minute. Darren Bent gave Sunderland their second goal in extra time and some solace from a last cause.
Manchester United must have had an eye on this match and must have felt the heat as their match against Burnley went 0-0 till half time. But three half time goals assured that Manchester United continued to maintain pressure on the Premier League leaders. A spirited Burnley put up a huge fight and led to the hosts missing many chances. Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney scored within minutes to take Manchester United 2-0. Mame Diouf came in as sub and gave the final goal in extra time.
It was a match of the struggler’s as Wolves hosted Wigan Athletic. Second half goals from James McCarthy and Charles N’Zogbia assured that Wigan trounced Wolves and hold on a comfortable spot in the League table. Over at White Hart Lane, it seemed Hull Goalkeeper Boaz Myhill was all over the place as nothing seemed to go past him. Tottenham Hotspurs were held to a 0-0 draw despite many efforts by the hosts strikers. The Wales player stood in the way off Wilson Palacios and Robbie Keane’s superb scoops in the first half and defended everything to keep his team afloat.
