Terry scores the winner, puts Chelsea ahead of crucial United-Arsenal clash
John Terry hit the winner for Chelsea in a crucial clash against Burnley to keep other top rank aspirer’s at bay before the Manchester United-Arsenal clash tonight. The under-fire skipper is facing some hard moments after some revelations about his personal like in the newspapers, things that might end his rosy career with England. But Terry was the man of the minute as he scored in Frank Lampard’s corner to give a lacklustre Blues side a very important win.
While the African Cup of Nations’ players had still not joined, it was Nicolas Anelka who gave the opening in the 27th minute only to be equalised by Darren Fletcher in the 50th. Chelsea seemed out of sorts after that as the hosts had flashes of brilliance on the field. but this important win gave them breathing space at the top of the Premier League table with a 4 and 5 point difference with United and Arsenal respectively. They would now be closely watching the encounter tonight and hoping for a draw between the second and third placed teams.
Liverpool had a world of a confidence in their stride as they won 2-0 against Bolton at Anfield. It was Dirk Kuyt who scored in the first half only to be awarded a lifeline when Kevin Davies deflected Insua’s pass for an own goal. The 2-0 advantage was too much for Owen Coyle’s struggling side and The Kops saw themselves moving to a strong 5th spot in the table. Missing Fernando Torres, the hosts didn’t see any fascinating play from the otherwise brilliant Steven Gerrard who was visibly not very fit to play. It remains to be seen what they come up against better football sides.
Aston Villa continued to apply pressure on Liverpool and Tottenham as they defeated Fulham 0-2 in a great first half performance. Agbonlahor was the scorer both times; first heading in a Stiliyan Petrov’s fine right-wing cross and then a fine curl just before second half. While Fulham put up a fighting display in the second half, it wasn’t enough to break the Villa defenses. With this win, Aston Villa’s tryst for a fourth spot seem just a few matches away.
