Baines enjoying competition for places
England left-back Leighton Baines insists that he is relishing the competition for places in the national side at the moment and says it is what has been driving him on this season.
Baines of course if often kept out of Roy Hodgson’s side by Ashley Cole, the man regarded by many as the best left-back in the world. The Everton man could get his chance in Friday evening’s encounter against San Marino though, with Cole possibly being dropped after his offensive tweet about the FA.
The Chelsea full-back may even just be rested for the encounter as Roy Hodgson wants to keep his best players fit for Tuesday’s match against Poland. If you study the latest football results, you will see that San Marino have not won a match since 2004, so it should be a straight forward win for England.
Someone like Baines would love to get the chance to be involved from the start. However, he remains focused on playing to the best of his ability and hoping that is enough.
