Energy supplements have seen a particular increase in the football industry over the past few years, and despite related controversy, seem popular amongst players wishing to enhance their performance on the pitch. There are a huge number of supplements available, all claiming to help build strength, stamina and improve overall performance, though research is yet to prove how their use has affected the Premiership.

There are a wide variety of supplements on the market, but effective, well researched and popular supplements in the football industry are Creatine, Whey Protein and Caffeine. Creatine enhances the body’s natural production of the product used to enhance muscle performance, which can in turn enhance performance during high intensity work. whey protein shakes can enhance a players protein intake which in turn helps to increase lean body mass, protein of which is an important component involved in the repair of damaged cells and tissue and is used in a variety of hormonal and metabolic activities. Caffeine is a trimethylxanthine stimulant which can improve recovery time, enhance fat burning and endurance exercise and improve cognitive functioning.

The premiership has seen a large increase in the use of supplements to enhance performance player, though proven evidence is currently lacking. Researched evidence is usually exaggerated or lacking evidential evidence, though in theory it should provide a way to ensure that players are always having one of their best performance days rather an off day. Although, if the right amount of protein supplement is used, it is very evidential that it can improve performance and stamina for a match. Currently it is safe to say that most evidential effect of supplements on the football industry Premiership is the use of them and in turn, the availability of effective supplements.
