The FA Cup final is now just a week away and football fans in the betting world are already predicting a close game between Manchester City and Wigan.
For City, a trophy this Saturday would add some gloss on what has been a poor season after they failed to make headways in the Champions League and miserably slumped in defending their Premier League title.
Wigan, meanwhile, could give their supporters something to cheer as relegation looks increasingly likely. The Latics still have a handful of games to save themselves but they are destined to play Championship football next season.
The Cup final, therefore, is more than just a chance to win a trophy and Roberto Mancini and Martinez will field sides desperate to win the illustrious trophy.
City are rightly favourites and betting fans should back them to score in the first half. They’ve scored first in all six previous games before this weekend and beat Wigan 1-0 last month.
Expect City to take the lead and it will be down to Wigan’s spirit to get them back in the tie. They do pose a threat – most likely through Arouna Kone on Joleon Lescott while James McArthur and Paul Scharner can contribute from midfield – and will test Joe Hart over 90 minutes.
The safe money, however, is of course on City and this tie has the potential to repeat February’s League Cup final scoreline.
Wigan shouldn’t be as meek as Bradford were during their 5-0 hammering to Swansea but Martinez must structure his side to close down an in-form City midfield. Samir Nasri’s performances have picked up of late while David Silva is earning greater game-time this spring; they will be the two main threats coming from midfield to join Sergio Aguero up front.
Saturday’s clash poses to be a pulsating encounter if Wigan turn up, but betting fans must be aware City could walk this on their day.
